Common Questions
When can
I play golf?
OK...lets discuss the important stuff. When can I play golf doc? The final answer largely depends on the extent of your injury and your surgery however Dr. Brady does give you some specific guidelines. In the worst case scenario - such as a large rotator cuff repair, the return to golf schedule is as follows:
- First 6 weeks - nothing except a sling
- Second 6 weeks - putting allowed
- Third 6 weeks - greenside chipping
- Weeks 18 to 21 - chipping from 40 yards or so (1/2 swing)
- Weeks 22 - 25 - short game - 90 yards in (3/4 swing)
- After 25 weeks - Full swing - Get out that Driver!!!
When can I drive?
You can drive when you (and your family) feel you are safe to drive. Basically...I don't know when you can drive because I've never driven with you! For all I know you may not be safe now! I've had people drive as soon as 1-2 days after surgery and as long as 6 to 8 weeks after surgery. You must drive with the NON-operative arm however.
Can I take off my sling?
You may remove the sling for a shower and several times a day to perform your gentle shoulder exercises you learned in PT. You can loosen it if you are sitting watching TV. Prop the arm in a comfortable position. You should wear it for bed time...sorry!
Can I mess things up?
Yes...you messed up your God given shoulder therefore it is definately possible to mess up a repaired shoulder. However please don't stress over it because it is rare. Usually it takes a significant force to cause a re-tear or a new problem. As long as you are progressing slowly you should be fine.
What should I be careful about?
In general...listen to your pain. The first 6 weeks are the most critical and you should be careful during this time - go slow. With exercising you should gently push yourself to the point of discomfort but not to the point of true "PAIN"
What warning signs should I look for?
Thankfully arthroscopic shoulder surgery is very safe in general. The risks are small but they still do exist. There is unfortunately no way I could list all of the risks or everything to look for but basically if you are uncomfortable with anything or if you have any questions please call my office immediately. We will talk you through it and if necessary see you ASAP.
If you EVER feel it is an emergency immediately call 911 and go directly to the hospital.
