3. Secure the sling around the arm with the velcro and place a thumb strap in a comfortable position around the thumb to rest the thumb. This helps keep the elbow in the back of the sling so it doesn't slide off.

4. Apply the pillow underneath the sling and adjust the straps on the pillow such that it is secure but not too tight.

How often do I have to wear my sling?

The answer depends on the amount of work Dr. Brady performed on your shoulder. In general you should wear your sling most of the time until you see Dr. Brady at your first postoperative visit. You can remove it for your gentle exercises 2 to 3 times a day, for a shower, and if you are just resting in a seat you can loosen the sling for comfort. You should wear it at bed time and when you are out and about.

How LONG am I going to be in this sling?

Once again, this depends largely on the amount of repair Dr. Brady had to perform on your shoulder. It can be as short as one week and as long as 6 weeks. Dr. Brady will make this clear to you and your family following your surgical procedure and at postoperative visits.
