Rehabilitation Questions
How do I
rehab my shoulder?
The
rehabilitation will progress in stages. Typically there are
three stages:
- Home exercise program - In this stage you will perform some gentle range of motion exercises yourself at home. Dr. Brady will send you to pre-op therapy where you will learn this home program.
- Range of motion phase. In the second stage of rehab you will go to physical therapy to regain your full range of motion in the shoulder. When the therapy begins and how long this phase takes to complete is different depending on the exact surgery you had. Dr. Brady will try to give you some idea of the timing when you see him.
- Strengthening phase. The last stage of rehabilitation is dedicated to strengthening. Usually this also takes some physical therapy assistance to regain good strength. This is the phase when most patients really feel like they are starting to get a normal shoulder back.
